Chain-link Fence*

Wiener Sport-Club knocks the strong Vienna Hurricanes out of the playoffs.

Wiener Sport-Club entered the stage against Vienna Hurricanes with 3 rock-solid lines and motivated subs. Balanced emotion provided the concrete footings for cutting off the life-blood of the opponent, leaving them trying and trying, but to little avail. Goalie Tom Atzmann held their shots, all but 2. WSC scores 6, pacing the way for a 6 – 2 win at the Wiener Eisstadthalle last saturday night in front of ca. 150 attendees. Both, Eishockey Mannschaft Wiener Sport-Club and the WSC supporters earned the victory.

Nerves didn’t play a role at the get go. What the Hurricanes were not prepared for was the chain-link fence of WSC.

We came out strong, matching the Hurricanes every move. It was push and pull for both sides, back and forth, hit for hit. It remained scoreless until 12:15 of the first period when Mathias Klien beat the Hurricanes goalie, making it 1 – 0 WSC.

7 minutes later, the Prophet Sascha Streck did the same, making it 2 – 0. WSC holds this lead until the end of the first.

Continue on was more-or-less what Coach Ali told the team in the period break. We knew they’d be coming out strong, looking to point up and push us to our limits, but we were there and that was our game. We came out ready for them.

Upping the ante, Hurricanes opted to test WSC’s emotions by pushing the body contact game. This resulted in penalties for both sides, yet WSC remains cool. Both teams score one each in the second period.

Rene Martinu’s game winner came at 28:06, assisted by Mathias Klien. Enter the third period, 3 – 1 WSC.

Sport-Club’s game pressed on. Hurricanes wanted back in. Early in the third Peter Sandner came in the game cold, but showed he was damn ready, being in perfect position to receive a feed and deliver the precision upper-corner backhander beating the Hurricane goalie without chance. WSC 4 – 1. The scrappy play intensifies for both teams. Penalties abound. Prophet Streck relays the message that he will shoot a goal this period, and he does 12 seconds after Sandner’s tally, making it 5 -1 WSC.

In the following 15 minutes, a total of 8 penalties for both teams and one Hurricane goal at 46:01 make it 5 – 2 with about 12 minutes left to play. At 55:02 Daniel Kastner rifled one of his signature wrist shots from the point, beating the Hurricanes and their goalie. By this time it was clear that Sport-Club would hold it together and take the match.

The cork was in the bottle, Wiener Sport-Club wins 6 – 2.

It was noticable that Sport-Club was on top of their game last Saturday. Condition, emotion, position and readiness were all not to second think. Hats off! It was a classy win.

Onward to the Halbfinale against the Chiefs!!!

* A chain-link fence (also referred to as a hurricane fence) is a type of woven fence usually made from galvanized or coated steel wire. The wires run vertically and are bent into a zig-zag pattern so that each „zig“ hooks with the wire immediately on one side and each „zag“ with the wire immediately on the other. This forms the characteristic diamond pattern seen in this type of fence. – the internet.
