Coach Steve zum 3:2 vs. EHC United (engl.)
Last night at the EisStadthalle, the match between United and WSC tied 2 – 2 in the third period, WU asked me on the bench after a banging shift, ‚Do we need to be more aggressive’? Tricky question, clear answer. Both teams played with heightened, more or less, controlled aggression. There were enough big checks and penalty minutes for both teams. So when I hear that word, a flag instantly pops up and I envision the ref signaling for another penalty. My answer was something like, ‚Yes, but the better word is extra-effort’.
One of Sport-Club’s most decisive actions in the match was to get on the board first. It was the first period and the strong, disciplined United came out hard hitting and fast, but they did not expect WSC to be on their toes, countering their every move. Then, boom!, Magnus Tryggvason sent a wrist shot from the point into the lower right corner of the goal. 1 – 0 for WSC.
WSC ruled the first period calmly and decicively, outshooting United 14 – 1. United suffered penalty after penalty forcing them to tone down their play.
The second period was tight for both teams. Exciting back and forth hockey, with both teams tallying one each, Mathias Klien scoring for WSC. Shots on net, 13 – 5 for WSC. The score at the end of the period, 2 – 1 WSC.
United stepped up their game in the third. WSC matched their move, but United slammed one in at a certain point, tying the score, 2 – 2. Back to zero – zero.
WU got back on ice with the first line after our exchange of words, and with 6:12 left on the clock, put in the winning goal. WSC held the fort, played as if it was the begin of the first period and didn’t allow United’s shooters to get near the net. The buzzer signaled the end of the game and the WSC fans howled.
WSC takes it, 3 – 2 in front of ca. 100 lucky fans for both teams. The shots on goal stand: WSC – 36, United – 19. This was a damn exciting hockey game. Hats off to both teams. Hats off to WSC for playing with a new consistancy and calm seriousness. And extra hats off to the man of the match, goalie Helge Herglotz, for keeping cool and being the roots of the WSC forest.
